Transfer to a beachside hotel. Easy first evening – beach relaxation before the journey begins.
Drive north to the Kalpitiya Peninsula – afternoon kayaking through mangrove channels and paddleboarding on the flat lagoon.
Early boat out for dolphin watching – spinner pods of hundreds are common. Return for kitesurfing or windsurfing, bonfire evening on the beach.
Drive to Mannar – a long flat peninsula with untouched beaches and sandbanks. No resort infrastructure. Just a coast that hasn’t been discovered.
Drive inland to a forest eco-lodge. Afternoon spa or Ayurveda session, gentle birdwatching walk. A deliberate shift of pace.
Drive east to Trincomalee and the clifftop Koneswaram Temple. Long, uncrowded Nilaveli Beach – first real ocean swimming of the trip.
Boat to Pigeon Island – blacktip reef sharks, hawksbill turtles, vibrant coral in the clearest water on the island. Optional scuba for certified divers.
Scenic coastal drive south to Arugam Bay – surf cafes, low-key energy, early night before the morning session.
Morning surf session at the main point break. Afternoon lagoon safari at Pottuvil – crocodiles, water birds, occasional elephants.
Nothing mandatory. A second surf, beach yoga, long breakfast, or just the east coast at its most unhurried.
Drive to Yala for an afternoon safari in Block 1. Leopards, elephant herds at the coastal lagoons. Overnight safari lodge.
Optional dawn safari, then drive west to Tangalle – rocky headlands and secluded coves. An evening on the beach with no particular plan.
Morning swim at Tangalle, then Rekawa Turtle Conservation Project (five species nest here). Farewell beach dinner at Mirissa or Weligama.
Drive to Colombo and transfer to Bandaranaike International Airport.
